Much like bad weather hit the northern region the night before, Manchester City swept Manchester United away at the their home ground. It was a convincing three goal win for Andrée Jeglertz’s side owing to goals from Rebecca Knaak, Shaw and Hemp. It was a display that firmly established their championship potential as they strengthened their position at the WSL pinnacle.

Back-to-Back Defeats for United

This result signalled back-to-back Women's Super League setbacks for Skinner's side for the initial occasion since spring 2024, leaving them a significant margin off the table toppers with their trophy ambitions in serious doubt.

United’s ability to balance domestic and European soccer with a limited squad has been a widely debated issue since they qualified for the UCL. Looking at the calendar, it always seemed this was the matchday that would fully examine this fortitude. Unfortunately for the opposition, they seemed fatigued from start to finish, the historic win against PSG clearly having left its mark.

Team Changes

Marc Skinner had tried to freshen things up with a handful of adjustments. Ella Toone, Elisabeth Terland, Dominique Janssen and Galton all provided freshness, although the omission of the high-performing Malard to the bench caused surprise.

Manchester City, in contrast, have no similar loading concerns. Andrée Jeglertz made a single alteration from their most recent win over Everton with Lauren Hemp making her first start since recovering from a fitness issue.

Dominant First Half

The storm clouds started to accumulate for Skinner and his side from the kickoff. This was a show of the strength from City whose dynamic offense manipulated and tore United open with a sublime initial 45 minutes display that saw them score three goals in just over twenty minutes.

This put the hosts in a commanding position and saw the visitors disorganized. Prior to this match, the away side had let in just six in this WSL season but they disintegrated in the face of Manchester City's offensive ingenuity.

Initial Opportunities

The warning signs came soon when Vivianne Miedema used her power to bundle Zigiotti off the ball, only to pull her shot wide. Hemp was at the core of everything from the start, exploiting the room left by Riviere down United’s wing. Her passes were posing a threat and led to an chance for Yui Hasegawa that Anna Sandberg scrambled off the line.

United had several forays forwards, their direct style giving them options in the flanks but they could not trouble Yamashita. Manchester City, meanwhile, dominated the ball, teasing their opposition and trying to draw them out of their organization.

Triple Strike

They made their pressure count with almost the first period played when Aoba Fujino won the home team a set-piece. A ball to the far post was nodded across goal by Bunny Shaw for Knaak to nod home. It was City’s seventh goal from a cross of the campaign.

They increased their lead with an additional two goals just before the break. When Jade Rose was able to drive through the midfield from central defence, the field became spacious for the hosts. The influential Casparij collected the pass on the right before providing a pinpoint ground pass for Bunny Shaw to bundle home. Shortly later, they had a third after a rapid shift in the ball saw Lauren Hemp allowed the room to drive a effort home from outside the box.

After the Break

The primary adjustment came from the United manager at the break as Melvine Malard came on for Terland but by this time it was ineffective to shift the momentum of the match. Ex- Manchester City player Park came nearest, rattling the woodwork, but the away team were offensively poor and failed to produce a one shot on target.

The home side, in contrast, could have increased their cushion when a delightful Miedema long ball sent Shaw away only for her to fail to convert but it was insignificant to the winning team. After failing to overcome any opponent who finished above them last season, the manager's side now have wins against Arsenal and Manchester United to place them in a strong situation after the opening fixtures.
