A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and management of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The crash happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a line developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify what caused this accident,” affirmed the country's president.
The official confirmed that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The leader stated plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Flagship Project of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the previous administration, whose time in office ended the prior year. This rail line was a hallmark of his leadership's economic agenda for the southern region.
Another massive train initiative from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The construction of both train projects was managed by the armed forces, marking a significant expansion of its responsibilities in public infrastructure. They were completed at an rapid speed, beating expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously raised ongoing concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This encompasses an prior accident this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced several non-lethal derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a primary political opposition demanded an urgent pause in the development and management of all such projects.
This stoppage was proposed until the completion of a comprehensive safety audit. The party stated that the loss of life "calls for immediate answers."
In reaction, the national leader asserted that the train had been functioning in full adherence to all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and management of these vital projects.
